[edit] The 1974 Registry occupation

Students originally started the 1974 occupation of the Flinders University registry as a protest over compulsory History examinations. The occupation lasted 28 days and was on occasion violent.

The students demanded that the decision making process at the university be made more democratic. Specifically they demanded that all people involved in courses should involved in determining methods of assessments.

The Students seized control of the Vice Chancellor’s office and threatened to open confidential filing cabinets unless their demands were not met. The university administration did not meet the student’s demands and so the threat was carried out.

The students were eventually evicted from the registry by staff weilding bolt cutters and iron bars. Once the students had been evicted the staff then occupied the registry along with hired security guards to enure there was no futher occupation by students.

The 2004 occupation of the registry building was in response proposal by the university council to raise the fees at the university by 33% without first consulting students.

Although the student occupation succeeded in forcing University council to delay increases to the fees charged to students it ultimately failed as the increases were introduced later at a secret council meeting held off campus.
